In her final novel, Daniel Deronda, George Eliot attempts to provide a positive and authentic representation of Jewish identity and Jewish nationalism in Victorian England. However, her characterization of Mordecai as a visionary poetic consumptive exposes the limitations of the English language as a channel for representing non-Christian identities.
