Using AI with Confidence: Validating Trust, Governance, and Adjudication

Abstract

Establishing trust and validation within artificial intelligence workflows requires a practical communication framework that preserves human judgment, evidence discipline, and organizational accountability. Designed for Alabama Cooperative Extension professionals, this work addresses the “Professional Pause,” as a repeatable decision process embedded within an AI-assisted communication workflow: Generate, Review, Professional Pause, and Publish. Within the pause, participants verify factual claims and sources, validate local and audience fit, and adjudicate whether content should be approved, revised, held, or routed to a qualified authority.

Through interactive polling, participant decision exercises, model-output comparisons, communication reviews, and realistic Extension scenarios, this work demonstrates how AI-generated content can appear fluent and authoritative while still introducing unsupported claims, inappropriate recommendations, accessibility barriers, privacy concerns, or role violations. Examples include county flyers, professional emails, meeting agendas, educational publications, social media communications, and higher-risk resident inquiries. Particular emphasis is placed on matching review depth to consequence through Quick Check, Peer Review, and Expert Verification processes.

Through reinforcement, professional confidence in AI lies not in automated output but in a transparent and defensible human review process. The materials are intended to support Extension educators, communications professionals, and program personnel seeking practical approaches to AI-assisted work that protect evidence quality, public trust, institutional responsibility, and professional authority.
