DescriptionThe object of this test was to determine the performance of the 300-horsepower Hispano-Suiza Model "H" engine, with a compression ratio of 6.5:1 operating on aviation gasoline blended with General Motors antiknock compound No. 1. The output with the 6.5:1 compression ratio pistons using "doped" fuel was 8.6 per cent greater, and the specific fuel consumption 7.9 per cent less than obtained with the same carburetor settings on the standard engine equipped with standard 5.3:1 compression ratio pistons and operating on unblended aviation gasoline at 1,800 revolutions per minute. The high compression pistons are lighter than the standard pistons and should reduce engine vibration, but this could not be verified on the rigid dynamometer mounting.
