DescriptionThe purpose of these tests was to determine as far as possible the effect of three years of service upon the condition and physical properties of 44 by 10 airplane tires and to indicate a maximum service life, after which all tires should be removed and considered unfit for further service. From the information obtained, it is concluded that, given the proper care and supervision, especially with reference to maintaining the proper air pressures, straight side casings should have a service life greater than three years; and further, it is believed that tires of the straight side type can be kept in service until complete failure of the rubber tread, as all indications point to the fact that the tire carcasses are still in good condition after the failure of the tread.
