Description
The purpose of this investigation was to determine the physical characteristics of steel propeller X-14849. The steel contains a pronounced ghost-line structure, and this makes the material undesirable. The chromium-vanadium steel used in this propeller is one of the most satisfactory steels for this purpose, and would have been satisfactory if the steel had been of the proper quality, and the forging and heat-treating operations had been performed in accordance with the best practice.
