The purpose of this test was to determine the capacity of the oleo strut to absorb the energy of impact due to free drop. This oleo strut can absorb the energy of a 36-inch free drop with a total weight of 1,250 pounds without exceeding a maximum load of 11,000 pounds. This load causes a maximum deflection of the tire of 3.6 inches. The wheel and tire used were 30 by 5, inflated to 60 pounds per square inch pressure. The efficiency of the oleo is 36.1 per cent, a low figure in comparison with other hydraulic shock absorbers.
