Comparison of wind tunnel tests with flight tests on a number of detachable blade propellers made from the same plan form (airplane branch report)
DescriptionA large number of the metal propellers designed at the Materiel Division have been made from a uniform plan form as to width and thickness and have been variable only as to diameter and initial or designed pitch ratio. A series of model propellers 30 inches in diameter were designed from this plan form, five propellers comprising the series. The five propellers were laid out as true screws for ratios of forward to peripheral velocities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, and 0.5, respectively. Each propeller was tested at a series of angular settings measured at the 12-inch radius which corresponds to 0.8 times the tip radius. This report includes the results of these tests.
