MOTT and PERRY M. SMITH 1 INTRODUCTION W EATHER INFORMATION is of utrost importance to veg- etable growers. Frost dates, rainfall, and temperatures (maximum and minimum) have been and will continue to be important. As growing becomes more specialized in regard to scheduling for the processor, for mechanical harvesting, and to get the maximum use of a dwindling labor supply, even more weather data are needed. In this publication "growing degree days" or "heat units" as well as basic weather information are given. Data are made available by the Environmental Science Services Admini- stration for seven weather stations in Alabama. These include Clanton, Dothan, Frisco City, Greensboro, Madi- son, Oneonta, and Robertsdale. The location of these stations is such that all areas of the State are included. The terms growing degree days and heat units will come to be used with many crops. NEED FOR FORECASTING HARVESTING DATES Mechanical harvesting is now a reality with several vegetable crops. As progress is made in this field, plan- ning and production get more complicated. To use a 10- to 20-thousand dollar harvesting machine economically, it must be used ovei" a long harvesting season. This means that plantings must be staggered and harvest dates pre- dicted on as sound a basis as possible. Allowing a con- stant number of calendar days between plantings does not always give the desired results. The growing-degree day theory of scheduling removes much of the guesswork since heat units are considered rather than just calendar days for planting. Assuming that other variables such as rainfall remain constant, the grow- ing degree day method helps to make the scheduling of plantings and the forecasting of harvest time a matter of simple arithmetic. GROWING DEGREE DAYS (HEAT UNITS) Computing growing-degree days, sometimes called "heat units," is a simple means of relating air temperature to plant growth, development, and maturation. It is an arith- mnetic accutmulation of the difference between daily mean temperatures and a given base temperature. The base temperature varies with crops. It is determined experi- mentally for each crop under variable seasonal tempera- tures. At temperatures above the base, the amount of SAdvisory Agricultural Meteorologist, ESSA-Weather Bu- reau, Agricultural Service Office, and Specialist in Commercial Horticulture, Cooperative Extension Service, Anburn University. growth and time of maturation is related proportionally to the amount of heat units accumulated. The base tempera- ture generally agreed upon for sweet corn, snapbeans, lima beans, and tomatoes is 50F. For Irish potatoes it is 45F. For garden peas it is 40F. COMPUTING GROWING-DEGREE DAYS The heat units or growing-degree days are computed on a daily basis using maximum and minimum daily tem- peratures. It is computed daily by averaging the maximum and minimum temperatures and then subtracting the cor- rect base temperature for the particular crop. For example: Crop --. Snapbeans Base temperature 50F Max. temperature for day 75F Min. temperature for day 55F Total = 130F Average = 139 divided by 2 = 65 65 (the average) - 50 (the base) 15 heat units Under this condition, a crop of snapbeans with a base of 50 will have an accumulation of 15 heat units or grow- ing degree days for that day. These calculations start at planting time and are accumulated throughout the growing season until harvest. Whenever the daily average temperature is equal to or lower than the base temperature, the number of growing degree days for that day is zero. PREDICTING CROP MATURITY AND SCHEDULING OF PLANTINGS Heat unit requirements for different varieties of certain vegetables are becoming more generally available. Some of this information can be secured from seed companies, experiment stations, and the extension service. Average heat unit accumulations beginning March 1 for base tem- peratures of 40.F, 450F, and 50 0 F for selected locations in Alabama are given in Tables 1 through 21. If a variety of snapbeans is known to mature with ap- proximately 1100 heat units, a grower can take the aver- age accumulation of heat units in his area starting at time of planting and estimate the time of harvest. However, since there are no two seasons alike, the predicted time of harvest will generally have to be adjusted depending on the heat unit accumulation for that season. The most valuable usage of heat units comes in the scheduling of plantings so as to use mechanical harvesters and processing plant facilities most efficiently. A 5-day spread in planting does not necessarily mean that there will be a 5-day spread in the harvest time. For example, in southern Alabama the daily heat unit accumulation dur- ing late May or June, which is the usual snapbean harvest- ing season, may be around 30 per day. During the bean planting season in March the heat unit accumulation may be around 15. Theoretically for a 5-day harvest spread between plantings in May or June the grower should not make the second planting until around 150 heat units have accumulated. This may be anywhere between 6 and 15 days. The heat unit method is not fool proof since factors such as day length and rainfall are not considered. How- ever, it does give growers and processors some basis to schedule planting and predict harvest dates. By keeping up with the daily heat unit accumulation and studying short and long range weather forecasts, along with ex- perience, it can be made to be an effective tool in the production of certain crops. CROPS AND AREAS Growing-degree days or heat units have already been used to a limited extenrit in Alabama by some processors in scheduling plantings of snapbeans in Baldwin County. It is anticipated that snapbeans will be grown in other areas of the State to be harvested mechanically as processors seek to spread their season. These same data can be used with crops such as peas (English and Southern), sweet corn, Irish potatoes, lima beans and others. The stations selected for presentation of data are located in areas of present production and in areas where there is definite potential for the expansion of vegetable crops. EXPLANATION OF TABLES AND GRAPHS Average Growing Degree Days and Accumulated Total The tabulations in Tables 1 through 21 provide the average daily growing degree days and accumulated totals beginning March 1st as computed for the period of record indicated on the tables for each station for the months of March through November to the base 40, 45, and 50F temperatures. The averages provided were obtained by computing each individual degree day for each base as the difference between the base and the daily mean temperature and then accumulating those obtained from March 1st through November. For quick reference, graphs of the same data showing the mean accumulated growing degree days versus the date have been prepared on pages 27-30. Average Dates for Last Spring and. First Fall Occurrences of Temperatures Table 22 presents the geographical location for each of the 7 stations along with the average dates on which tem- peratures of 32F and 28F last occurs in Spring and the average dates of the first occurrence of 32F and 28F in the Fall. The table also gives the length of the growing season which is defined as the average number of days between the last freezing temperature in Spring and the first freez- ing temperature in the Fall. The map entitled "Length of Growing Season" gives the same information for the entire State of Alabama. Caution should be exercised in using this map since lines are drawn primarily for available point data values. Interpolation may not produce strictly valid values for other points due to influence of evaluation, top- ography, and other factors. Data given by the map and Table 22 are based on 30 years of record from 1931 through 1960. Probability Dates for Last Spring and First Fall Occurrence of 32F and 28F Data used in Table 23 were taken from the Climatologi- cal records of the United States Weather Bureau for the 30-year period 1931-1960. In this publication, the period over which spring low temperature data is assumed to range is January I to June 30 and July 1 to December 31 for fall low temperatures. Average Monthly and Annual Rainfall Mean rainfall data given in Table 24 was obtained from 22 years of record (1931-1952) except for Oneonta which was computed from 16 years record (1937-1952). How to Use Nomographs To compute growing degree days from nomographs, place a straightedge on the maximum temperature (T,) in the left-hand column and the minimum temperature (T,,) in the right-hand column. The mean (T) and the growing degree days (GDD) are given at the point where the straightedge intersects the middle column. ACKNOWLEDGMENT Appreciation is extended to the State Climatologist Of- fice, ESSA-Weather Bureau, Montgomery, Alabama, for furnishing data used in the map and supplementary tables. [4] TABLE 1.
