M. Gl ass and D. I. Bransby 1 INTRODUCTION Soybean variety tests are conducted annually by the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station. The 9 locations used represent the major soil and climatic regions of Alabama. These locations are divided into logical soybean growing regions. The regions and locations are: Region Location Northern Belle Mina, Crossville Central Camden, Prattville Southern Brewton, Headland Black Belt Marion Junction (2 soils) Gulf Coast Fairhope EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The standard tests were designed as a randomized complete block wit h four replications. Plot size was four 24- to 36-inch rows 20 feet long. Sixteen feet of the middle two rows were harvested for yield. Seeding rate was 10 viable seeds per foot. of row. The early date t est was arranged in incomplete lattice square design with four replications. Data were collected on seed yield, moisture, lodging, shattering, plant height, and maturity date. Plot yields were adjusted to 13 percent moisture 1 - almost all plants erect. 2 - either all plants leaning slightly (less than 450) or a few plants down. 3 - either all plants leaning moderately (approximately 45) or 25 to 50 percent of the plants down. 4 - either all plants leaning more than 450 or 50 to 80 percent of the plants down. 5 - more than 80 percent of the plants down Shattering was rated on a scale of 1 to 5 based on performance of the border row 14 days after maturity. A rating of 1 indicates no shattering, a rating of 3 indicates a 4 to 8 percent shattering, and a rating of 5 is 20 percent or more shattering. Plant height was determined by measuring from the ground to the top of the plant at maturity. Maturity date was the day 95 percent of the pods reached mature pod color. Harvest was approximately 7 to 10 days later. SEASONAL CONDITIONS Rainfall (Table 3) in April and May 1992 was such that planting dates for the standard tests in northern Alabama were delayed. All other standard tests were planted for optimum growth. The normal planting dates for full season plantings in the regular tests are the first week in May, May 15-25, and May 25 to June 5 for northern, central, and southern Alabama locations, respectively. The rainfall for 1992 was normal in May at all locations and was generally adequate for vegetative growth through July in central and southern Alabama. COMPARING VARIETIES To aid in determining real yield differences, a statistical analysis -7- of variance is performed on the data from each location. The L.S.D. (least significant difference) and C.V. (coefficient of variation) are given for each location's 1992 test, and for the location's or region's 2- and 3-year averages. The difference in yield of two varieties must exceed the L.S.D. value for one variety to be considered superior to the other in yield in that particular test. The C.V. is a measure of the variability in an experiment. An increase in its value indicates an increase in the unexplained variability. Since the performance of varieties varies with location and year, long-term averages from several locations are more reliable than 1-year performance. Three-year regional averages are considered a reliable evaluation of the relative performance of varieties. A committee comprised of Department of Agronomy and Soils personnel involved in soybean extension and research reviewed the past 3 years of soybean variety test data to assemble the list of recommended varieties on page 33. The acceptable varieties are not all equal in performance. Some are outstanding in one or more characteristics; while others may possess a satisfactory, although not outstanding combination of all characteristics. -8- Table 1. Pace, D.B. Weaver, L.D. Ploper 2 One hundred ten public and private cultivars in Maturity Groups (MG) 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8 were evaluated under controlled conditions for reactions to a virulent isolate of Cercospora sojina. The isolate was collected from Kirby soybean at Jay, Florida, during 1991, and was found to be different from described races 1 through 5 based on reaction to differentials (Phytopathology 71:334-336). Cultivars were divided into four MG classes: 4 and 5 (Expt. 1), 5 (Expt. 2), 6 (Expt. 3), and 7 and 8 (Expt. 4) for analysis. A completely randomized design with four replications was used in each experiment. The experimental unit was a single pot with three plants. Seedlings were inoculated at the V2-V3 growth stage by spraying the adaxial and abaxial leaf surfaces with a conidial suspension (4-6 X 104 conidia/mL), using a freon- propelled atomizer. Inoculated plants were placed in a moist chamber for 3 days, then transferred to a greenhouse bench where they were kept at 25 to 30 C. Ratings were made 12-14 days after inoculation. Percent leaflet area infected, using a standard area diagram, was determined on three leaflets per plant. Most cultivars were rated either susceptible or resistant based on the observed reaction. Some variation was observed among susceptible lines, which may have been the result of differences in leaf developmental stage at the 2 Graduate Reasearch Assistant, Professor, Department of Agronomy and Soils, and Visiting Scientist, Plant Pathology. -34- time of inoculation or modifying (minor) genes for resistance. At least 37% of the lines were susceptible to this isolate. Earlier MG lines had a higher proportion of susceptibles. All lines observed to be resistant in the field at Jay in the 1992 USDA Uniform Tests were rated resistant in this experiment. Young (thought to have the Rcs 3 gene for resistance to frogeye) showed a susceptible reaction. The reason for this was not known. -35- Appendix Table.
